garmin legend hcx
How do I program coordinates for finding a geocache into a Garmin eTrex Legend? (It is not Cx or Hcx model)?

I bought a used translucent blue Legend online and have only a Quick Start Guide. It seems I can only enter in where I am as a waypoint, not where I want to go. Is this model just used for “leaving breadcrumbs” for hiking and not used for geocaching? I now see the Cx model has a geocaching treasure chest icon but my model doesn’t have that. The Find Menu only has: Waypoints (that you’ve previously Marked), Favorites, Cities, Exits, and Points of Interest. I see no place to enter coordinates. I don’t even want to enter in the GCXXXX code, I just want to be able to hand enter in the cache’s coordinates. (The computer cable the seller gave me doesn’t look like it connects to the Legend at all, so I don’t mind hand-entering coordinates. I just want to get caching asap!) I’d really appreciate any help with this, as I feel I’ve wasted my money. Thanks.

You haven’t wasted your money! Many many people use this model for geocaching, and you CAN enter the cache’s coordinates.

Here’s the full manual for the eTrex Legend:

In case the manual confuses you, here’s the general procedure for the GPS receivers I have used (Garmins, Magellans, and DeLormes). I don’t have a Garmin right now, but generally you would use the same procedure as you do to mark your current location. You would then scroll down to the latitude and longitude fields to edit each field to match the coords of the geocache you are looking for. When you scroll down to the lat and long fields, you might have to press an enter button or something to go into an editing mode.

I have been geocaching for almost 5 years now. Hope you enjoy it.

Why is the Pre-Charged battery better? The Pre-Charged AA Battery is the next step in battery evolution. Original Alkaline batteries could only be used once and had to be thrown away. Bad for the environment, and bad for your wallet. Why throw money away? Ni-MH Rechargeable batteries were the solution, they could be used over and over again, but they had to be charged right out of the package, an...
